Stem Cells for Foot Ulcers

Ulcers are characterized by a rash, redness, brown discolouration, or dry, scaly skin. They may also be very deep, extending through the skin, exposing dermal tissues, tendons or bones. Other symptoms may be swollen legs, or a burning or itching sensation.

What causes foot ulcers?
Certain medical conditions may attribute to foot ulcer formation. The most common cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputations are due to persistent ulcers in patients with diabetes mellitus. High blood sugar levels over a period of time causes damage to nerves – peripheral neuropathy – leading to a loss of sensation in the extremities. This makes you prone to injury, as you remain unaware of any cuts or developing blisters which, if left uncared for, may get infected and progress to gangrene. Diabetics may also have poor circulation, affecting the body’s ability to heal.

What are the current treatments?
Goals of treatment are to relieve pain, speed up recovery, and heal the wound. This may involve:

  • Antibiotics – to prevent infection
  • Anti-coagulant medications – to prevent a blood clot
  • Debridement or amputation
  • Compression garments
  • Prosthetics or orthotics – to restore or enhance normal lifestyle function
  • Stem cell transplant – to stimulate angiogenesis and healing

How can stem cells help my ulcer?
Stem cells are the body’s ‘master’ cells because they can form a wide range of cell types making up the tissues, organs and systems in the body. Using your own stem cells allows for faster and efficient healing, generating vessel and tissue formation to the affected area. The increased blood flow to the area allows for the wound to close, and also for tissue regeneration and repair to the damaged region. Stem cells have the potential to save you from the discomfort and pain caused by an open wound, and from the trauma of losing a limb.
